New drug on the cards for cancer patients

Cancer victims may never have to go through chemo and radiation therapy again. Rhodes University's cancer researcher, Tebello Nyokong, says they have produced a drug that is not toxic to the body.

Nyokong says they are waiting for the drug's approval from the Medical Council. She says the medication targets cancer cells directly. Nyokong addressed the International Chemistry Convention in East London.

She says: “We are trying to find a solution to avoid the suffering of the people such that we have a treatment called photo, which means light therapy. So, basically we have drugs that we can then use on the cancer.”

The researcher adds: “Let’s just imagine skin cancer which will be an ugly bloc on your skin.  We can put the drug on the cancer and then put ordinary light, maybe we can filter it on the cancer and then it will go. The beauty of this treatment is that it can be applied anywhere in the rural areas.”
